On a Jan Morris kick ,I just finished Coronation Everest. This was written in 1953 when Jan was James (before her sex change operation) and a was a correspondent for the London Times newspaper. He traveled with the team that was the first to successfully climb Mt Everest. In covering this event he climbed to the 20,000 ft level himself and if that weren't exciting enough had to devise a code to send the news and a complicated system to get his dispatches transmitted form the remote area to London. This historic even was tied into and reported on the same date of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth hence the Books title. Now that I have finished this I am continuing my Morris kick returning to the second book of her Pax Britannica. Morris Rules! |
